Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care
Introduction (its purpose/activities/facilities):
- The department is well known not only in Delhi but all over the country for its quality of patient care, teaching and research. Besides providing anaesthesia sevices for surgical cases, the department also has a 7-bedded Main ICU and 6-bedded Trauma ICU. The department also provides pain management services and resuscitation facilities in all the areas of the hospital round the clock, and manage Central Sterilization Supply Department and Medical Gas Store of the hospital.
- The major research work and thrust areas include difficult airway management, critical care, paediatric anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia, pain management and trauma. In the previous years, many chapters have been written for various books and there are several publications international and national journals. The faculty members have achieved several laurels at national and international levels for research and related activities. They are invited reviewers as well as editorial board members for many national and international journals.
- The department organizes a national level Examination Oriented Refresher Course for Anaesthesia Postgraduate Students with tremendous success and country-wide participation. This educational endeavor has benefitted hundreds of anaesthesia post-graduate students from all over the country.
- The department regularly organizes BLS (Basic Life Support)courses for medical students as well as nursing and paramedical staff.
Services provided:
- The department provides anaesthesia services in the routine as well as the emergency theatres of the various surgical specialities namely, General Surgery, ENT, Opthalmology, Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Anaesthesia services in the remote locations like the CT scan rooms are also provided. Services for the critically ill patients are provided in the main and trauma ICUs. The department also runs a Pre-anaesthetic clinic on all the working days and checkups of patients to be taken up for surgery are done here. Pain alleviation services are provided at the pain clinic. The department also runs and maintains the CSSD and the Medical Gas plant. Besides all the clinical work, the department regularly conducts teaching programmes and activities of the post-graduate, under-graduate, nursing and medical students.

Departmental Chart (Organization Chart):
- The department is organized into 6 working units, each having around three consultants, for the smooth functioning of the work in the various operation theatres. The units have designated days for each operation theatre.
- One consultant each is posted at a time on rotation basis for two weeks in the main ICU and Trauma ICU areas.
