Overview:
- The Department of Neurosurgery was started in 1999 by Dr. Sanjeev Dua, with few residents and limited beds. Over the years the department has evolved and has currently 3 faculty members along with 15 senior resident and 14 junior resident doctors.
- The department has a 7 bedded ICU to manage critical patients along with separate operation theatre for routine and emergency surgeries.
- The department provides 24X7 emergency services for trauma and critically ill patients referred from other hospitals for tertiary care management. The department has multiple wards, with total capacity of 77 beds, dedicated for various subspecialties of Neurosurgery. The department plans to re-start academic training in Neurosurgery.

Facilities on 2nd Floor (Accident & Emergency Block):
- Neurosurgery Emergency (251- 12 bedded facility to provide round the clock immediate management of trauma patients)
- Spinal Ward (Ward 266- 6 bedded- for initial management of patients with spinal injuries)
Facilities on 3rd Floor (Accident & Emergency Block):
- Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit-(7 bedded for critical patients)-Proposed for up gradation to level II ICU ( 10 bedded)
- Paediatric Neurosurgery Ward (currently 4 bedded as side rooms- Proposed for expansion to 12 beds)
- Post Operative ward –HDU (Ward 381- 12 bedded- as a step down from ICU)
- Neurotrauma Ward (Ward 375-15 bedded- for stabilized trauma patients- Proposed for expansion to 22 beds)
- Pre-operative Ward (Ward 377- 8 bedded for patients admitted for elective surgeries)
- Special Ward (Ward 374- 4 bedded for unknown patients requiring special assistance and care)
SERVICES OFFERED
- The department has provided Neurosurgical training to 6 candidates (DNB awarded by NBE) and is regularly organizing various CMEs and conferences (under aegis of Delhi Neurological Association) in addition to participating in various inter-departmental activities.
- It is equipped with latest gadgets and equipments for providing best possible care to patients requiring neurological treatment which includes operating microscope, ultrasonic aspirator, image guidance system, DSA, endoscopic system.
Surgeries performed include:
- Routine Operation Theatre- 6th Floor- Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday- Proposed for 6 days a week
- Emergency Operation Theatre- 1st Floor- 24X7
- Digital Substraction Angiography and Aneurysm Clipping
- Complex surgeries – for skull base lesions, Aneuryms, AVMs
- TransSpenoidal surgeries (TNTS) - for Craniopharyngioma, Pituitary adenoma, CSF leak
- Craniotomy for neoplastic/other lesions at various locations
- Spinal surgery for various pathologies
- Peripheral nerve surgery
- Ventriculo-peritoneal shunting
- Endoscopy for intraventricular and deep seated lesions
- Burr hole for biopsy, ICP monitoring, Ommaya reservoir placement
- Emergency surgeries for head injury (SDH, EDH, Depressed fractures, ICH, cranioplasty, contusions, spinal trauma)
- Bed side procedures- EVD, Tracheostomy.
Average Annual Surgeries done
- The department operates around 250 major cases per year in routine theatre along with 500 cases in emergency theatre in addition to 650 minor cases annually (Total around 1400 /Year)
Average Annual Patients managed
- Neurosurgery OPD- Room No (41-A) with dedicated procedure room (41-B) –Mon/Wed/Fri 9am to 1pm with average yearly attendance more than 1.5 lakh patients
- Neurosurgery IPD- in various locations the department manages a large number of patients, both trauma and with other neurological problems (Average yearly patient management in different Neurosurgery wards is more than 30,000).
