INTRODUCTION (ITS PURPOSE/ACTIVITIES)

  • The Department of Surgery is committed to render high quality patient care, to educate and train medical students and surgical residents, and to conduct meaningful research projects in surgical field.
  • Besides providing routine surgical care to patients, the Department of Surgery also provides specialized services like diagnosis and therapeutic gastro-intestinal endoscopy; basic and advanced laparoscopic surgery; endourology for treatment of urinary calculus, urinary bladder tumors, and prostatic disease; and surgery for complex anal fistulas, CAPD catheter insertion and arteriovenus fistula formation for patients with chronic renal failure. The Department has contributed in WHO project for development of ‘A Teaching Module on Prevention and Control of Injury for Undergraduate Medical Education Curriculum’. The Department activity participates in National Family Welfare Programme for non-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) operations. A regular surgical skill training programme –Suture Practicum – is conducted for all the batches of interns posted in the department.

SERVICES PROVIDED

  • Department of Surgery provides management of both emergency and elective cases.

Emergency casesinclude-

  • Trauma; soft tissue infection and abscesses; deep vein thrombosis and abdominal emergencies like gastrointestinal bleeding, acute appendicitis, acute cholecytitis, acute pancreatitis, perforation peritonitis, intestinal obstruction etc.

Elective cases include-

  • Gastrointestinal surgery- Esophageal stricture, peptic ulcer disease, cholelithiasis, pseudocyst, of pancreas, splenic abscess, hypersplenism, chronic pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel, diseases, rectal prolapse, anal fissure, perianal fistula, hemorrhoids etc.
  • Urological procedures- Renal stones, ureteric stones, bladder stone, PUJ obstruction, uretheral stricture, benign hyperplasia of prostate etc.
  • Vascular surgery- Varicose vein, peripheral arterial diseases
  • Oncological surgery- Carcinoma breast including reconstructive procedure, GI malignancy, urological malignancy, soft tissue sarcoma, oral carcinoma etc.
  • Endocrine surgery- Goiter, carcinoma thyroid, parathyroid adenoma, Cushing syndrome, pheochromocytoma, adrenal adenoma etc.
  • Pediatric surgery- Congenital hernia, hydrocele, undescended testis, phimosis etc.
  • Minimal Access Surgery- Hepatobiliary, Gastrointestinal, Hernia, Urological diseases
  • The Department also provides services of upper GI and lower GI endoscopy, uroflowmetry and urodynamic study, and male sterilization services.
